A few weeks ago, a video was posted to YouTube with what appeared to be well over a dozen glowing orbs floating through the sky over Wheatridge, Colorado. Actually, YouTube has hundreds of similar videos from all over the world and many of them are titled or labeled as UFO videos.
Armadeaun featured the Wheatridge “UFO” video, asking visitors what they thought it could be. Several readers have responded with an explanation of Chinese sky lanterns. I’ve dug further to research this as a possibility, comparing other videos & photos of the sky lanterns and believe this is the most plausible explanation.
Sky lanterns, also known as Kongming Lanterns (or fire balloons & sky candles), are lightweight lanterns launched into the air using a candle of fuel cell which causes the air in the balloon to heat – as well as making the balloon glow. They are used in Chinese & Thai celebrations and for special occasions, such as weddings.
Interestingly enough, at the beginning of the Wheatridge UFO video, a woman’s voice can be heard saying, “…a wedding or something”. Directly below is the Wheatridge “UFO” video and under it is a video very similar to the Wheatridge video, showing the bright orange lights of what appear to be more sky candles.
We’ve also collected a few videos, below, showing what these Chinese sky lanterns look like up close & how they’re used. For now, we’re going to call this one “case closed”.
